TIP: Non-pesticide repellants for carpet moth

If you are dealing with a carpet moth problem and searching for natural remedies to combat these pesky intruders, below is a list of effective natural solutions that can help you tackle carpet moth infestations without resorting to harsh chemicals.

Lavender: Carpet moths are repelled by the strong scent of lavender. Place sachets filled with dried lavender or lavender essential oil-soaked cotton balls in your closets, drawers, and storage areas. This natural fragrance will discourage moths from laying eggs or settling in these areas.

Cedarwood: Similar to lavender, cedarwood has a strong scent that repels carpet moths. Use cedarwood blocks, chips, or sachets in your closets, storage boxes, or underneath furniture to deter moths from infesting these spaces. Add a few drops of cedarwood essential oil to any hanging blocks and drawer sachets.

Essential Oils: Other essential oils, such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, or peppermint oil, can also act as natural moth repellents. Mix a few drops of your chosen oil with water and spray it on carpets, rugs, and other infested areas. Remember to test the mixture on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the fabric.

Carpet Moths, Carpet Beetles and Silverfish: Essential info

You may not even be aware that these tiny creatures are present in your home. They are experts at burrowing, and choose to hide in wools, furs, animal hides, feathers, bones and silk.

Carpet Moths & Carpet Beetles

You may be surprised to know that with carpet beetles, it’s actually the larvae wreaking havoc, rather than the adult moths
They spend between 60 days and a year as larvae - plenty of time to cause substantial damage!
Keep your eyes peeled for larval skins and faecal pellets (brown or black, about the size of a grain of sand) in the warm, dark areas of your home or business.

Silverfish

Look for actual live specimens
Droppings (small, black and spherical like peppercorns)
Damage to your building and possessions (holes in wallpaper, books, papers and cardboard storage boxes)Droppings (small, black and spherical like peppercorns)
Yellow stains
Shed skins (predominantly in the kitchen and bathroom)

What we use for silverfish, carpet beetle and carpet moth control

We take a 2-step approach to treating carpet moth. We spray the carpet once, then 10 days later, after the breeding cycle, we go back and thoroughly vacuum all the carpet and respray.

We also spray in people’s wardrobes and behind their clothes and we encourage people to shake out their clothes (especially woollen jumpers and wool clothing) 2-3 days afterwards to dislodge any moths that might be remaining on their clothing.
